  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk Full-fat for best results

  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Use good quality sharp cheddar
  • 1/4 cup fresh herbs (chives, rosemary, thyme), chopped Choose your favorite herbs

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and chopped herbs.
  4. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Gently mix until just combined to form a shaggy dough.
Shaping
  1. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
  2. Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Use a sharp knife to score a shallow 'X' on the top of the loaf.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  2. Let cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm with butter for a delightful treat. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or freeze slices for longer storage.
