Method
Preparation
- Activate the yeast by combining it with warm milk and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, melted butter, red food coloring, and the activated yeast mixture to form a dough.
- Knead until smooth and elastic, then let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Filling and Shaping
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface.
- Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Tightly roll the dough from one long side and slice into individual rolls.
Baking
- Place the sliced rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving space between each.
- Let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes, then bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
Frosting
- For the frosting, beat together softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
- Frost the rolls while they are still warm for best results.
Notes
Store leftover rolls in an airtight container for up to 2 days at room temperature, or refrigerate for up to a week. You can freeze unfrosted rolls for longer storage.
