Ingredients
  

For the scones
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder adds the characteristic red velvet flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter keep it cold for flaky layers
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk for moisture and tenderness
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips tuck them in to prevent burning
For the glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk adjust for consistency

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Gently fold in the white chocolate chips.
Baking
  1. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times. Pat it into a circle about 1-inch thick.
  2. Cut the dough into wedges and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Glazing
  1. While the scones cool, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth.
  2. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones.

Notes

Store scones in an airtight container. To reheat, warm them in the oven for a few minutes. They can also be frozen before glazing.
