Ingredients
  

Cookie Dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Quality matters for best results.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Use high-quality vanilla for better flavor.
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons red or pink food coloring Optional, for color.
Decorating
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar or nonpareils For sprinkling before baking.
  • 1 cup powdered sugar For glaze or icing.

Method
 

Prepare the Dough
  1. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, mixing until just combined.
  4. If using food coloring, add it now until desired color is achieved.
Shape and Chill
  1. Shape the dough into logs, indenting one side to form a heart shape.
  2. Wrap the logs tightly in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Bake the Cookies
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the chilled dough into 1/4 inch thick slices and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Sprinkle with granulated sugar or nonpareils before baking.
  4. Bake for 8-12 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  5. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days. Freeze any leftovers for up to 2-3 months. You can also decorate them with icing or edible embellishments for a special touch.
