Method
Prepare the Dough
- Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, mixing until just combined.
- If using food coloring, add it now until desired color is achieved.
Shape and Chill
- Shape the dough into logs, indenting one side to form a heart shape.
- Wrap the logs tightly in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Bake the Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the chilled dough into 1/4 inch thick slices and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle with granulated sugar or nonpareils before baking.
- Bake for 8-12 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
- Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days. Freeze any leftovers for up to 2-3 months. You can also decorate them with icing or edible embellishments for a special touch.
